Very shortly after moving to FL, all the stars aligned in a way that brought my grandmother to live with us for a month.
Maria Socorro.
What an experience it was to have her.
In the 4 weeks that she was here:
I learned how to make some of her best recipes (alcapurrias de yuca [but vegan, of course] coming in a recipe post soon. Wait on it)
I got a crash course in familial history
I processed some wild ass chisme
I discovered that I am able to extend grace (a whole lot of it), even when I'm exhausted and short on patience
I only hope that I was able to give her something of at least half the value of what she gave to me.
My babies adore her and she shared a tenderness with them that I didn’t even know she had. There was much about her and my lineage that I learned about for the first time.
Fun Facts!
She is a natural horticulturalist (As is Lion. It was cute seeing them interact.)
My great grandmother was clairvoyant (As am I)
My great-great grandmother was a home birth midwife in Puerto Rico (I've had 2 home births)
And of course, there are a bunch of not-so-fun facts that I shall keep neatly tucked away.
Moral of the story is: I thank Jah for the priceless gift that came in my 4 weeks with Maria Socorro. It was something that I never knew I needed.
